Organization Information
Idiap Research Institute (http://idiap.ch) is an independent, nonprofit, research foundation located in Martigny (Switzerland) and affiliated with Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL). Its activities encompass basic research and development in the areas of multimedia information management, perceptual and cognitive systems, human-robot interaction, social media, biometric person recognition, multimodal information interfaces, and large scale machine learning. Idiap is also actively involved in technology transfer activities through its dedicated spin-off IdeArk (http://www.ideark.ch).
The robot learning and interaction group at Idiap focuses on human-centric robot applications, with the objective of developing probabilistic approaches to encode movements and behaviors for robots evolving in human environments. In these applications, the models serve several purposes (recognition, prediction, online synthesis), and are shared by different learning strategies (imitation, exploration or incremental refinement). The aim is to facilitate the transfer of skills from humans to robots, or in-between robots, by exploiting multimodal sensory information and by developing intuitive teaching interfaces.
